First timers success! - Red Deer - Te Kopia range

Pig hunting is popular in the Rotorua Lakes area, concentrated mainly on the vast privately owned pine forests. Often this hunting is regulated through hunting clubs within the forestry organisation.

Red deer, Sambar deer, Dama wallaby and low populations of goats, can all be found on public conservation land in the Rotorua Lakes area.

The taking of hunting dogs onto public conservation land is currently under review. Contact the Rotorua Lakes Area Office for information on this.

Location

The Rotorua Lakes Area covers approximately 35,000 hectares of public land, made up of relatively small reserves bordered mostly by farmland, pine forest or lakes. The land has largely been formed through geothermal activity and this is still very apparent and active in of several hunting spots in the area.
