Today, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Jan Wright, released her report into the management and administration of stewardship land.

DOC manages stewardship areas under the Conservation Act 1987 to protect their natural and historic values.

Stewardship areas were allocated to the Department when it was formed in 1987. They were former State forest and Crown land areas that were considered to be more appropriately managed for their conservation values by DOC.

Around 30% of conservation land is stewardship land, aproximately 2,508,000 hectares - 9% of the country.

DOC welcomes the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment's report and will report back to the Minister once we have had a chance to look at the content and the recommendations.

We are not in a position to comment further at this time.
