Introduction

An interactive map of restoration work to improve the health of estuaries (mountains to sea). It also includes links to agency and community initiatives, strategic plans, plant lists and restoration guides.

Around New Zealand, councils, government agencies and community groups are working to enhance the health of estuaries.

Many of New Zealand's estuaries have been degraded by intensive land-use practices, pollution, land reclamation and alterations to natural river and tidal flows.

Restoration work led by iwi and community groups is helping to improve the health of estuaries and the numbers of birds, fish and plants that live there. Restoration of both the estuary and the rivers and streams that flow into it, is vital.
