Time: 4–6 hr
Distance: 9.5 km
Setting off from the Greyneys shelter car park, cross the Bealey River just above its confluence with the Mingha River. If the river is not easy to cross, save the trip for another day. Shortly after, you will need to cross the Mingha River. Look out for the orange triangle marker on the opposite bank.
The track then enters the forest for about 1 km before returning to the riverbed. After 1 hr in the riverbed, a crossing of the Edwards River East Branch is necessary.
Beyond the East Edwards crossing, the track enters a forested section and rises and falls several times as it avoids steep gullies above the Edwards River canyon. Take extreme care on this part of the track as there are large drop-offs and steep sections of track.
The track eventually emerges among red tussocks on the upper river flats; it is easy to lose the way in the maze of tussocks. The track then leads briefly back into the forest before emerging on the river flats with a clear view to Edwards Hut.

Plan for river crossings
There are numerous river crossings along this route. Do not attempt this track during and after heavy rainfall. Rivers and major side streams can rise quickly and become dangerous.
Ensure you have the latest weather information and that you are confident in assessing rivers and know how to cross them safely.
How to cross rivers safely - Mountain Safety Council website
DOC markers may not indicate the safest crossing point. You may need to walk upstream or downstream to find a more suitable place to cross.
If travelling this route during rainy weather take spare food in case you are stuck in the hut by rising river levels.
