Rimutaka Forest Park hut wardens

Become a volunteer hut warden for one of the booked huts in the Orongorongo Valley, Rimutaka Forest Park.

Along with hut warden duties you will be given an opportunity to experience other conservation tasks. This may include bird counts, kiwi recovery, track and facility maintenance, habitat restoration, weed control, tree planting, and giving talks.

Date: The summer warden season runs from Labour weekend (late October) to Easter weekend (mid April).

Available positions: Regular weekend wardens as well as longer term volunteers throughout the season.

Location: The Huts are located throughout the Orongorongo Valley, aprox 40 min drive from central Wellington and 1.5hrs walk from the park entrance at Catchpool Valley.

Job description

Volunteer wardens work on a 5 nights on, 2 nights off roster. Duties include:

  • Giving out information including weather forecasts
  • Contact for search and rescue
  • Hut and track cleaning and maintenance
  • Hut and camp pass checks
  • Hut statistics reporting

Training and orientation provided prior to start.

Fitness and skills required

  • Fit and healthy (able to carry own personal gear)
  • Good grasp of English
  • Good people skills
  • First aid certificate essential
  • Tramping/hiking experience preferred (knowledge of the outdoors)
  • Driver's license (clean record)
  • Interest in wildlife
  • Compliance with Department of Conservation Health and Safety Policy
  • Knowledge of VHF radio would be advantageous
  • Background checks and references may be required

Additional information

Accommodation provided:
Days on: Warden quarters at Turere Lodge, Orongorongo Valley.
Days off: Catchpool field base.

Transport: Hut Wardens need to organise their own transport to and from the Catchpool field base. Transport will be provided from the field base to the track start.

Note: If you are an international volunteer it is beneficial if you have an international licence and are comfortable driving on New Zealand roads.

Food: Volunteers must provide their own food.

What to bring

  • Tramping gear for all conditions (especially when the weather is cold and wet)
  • Backpack, tramping boots, sleeping bag etc.
