Matiu/Somes Island volunteer opportunities

Planting volunteers

The Department of Conservation is seeking volunteers to help plant out Matiu/Somes Island.

Dates: 11 June to 15 June 2012

Where: Matiu/Somes Island.

Number of volunteers required: 10

Requirements: You must be fit and capable of carrying plants on steep, slippery terrain.

Training: No training required.

Accommodation: Provided.

What to bring: Gear list three.

Food: You'll need to bring your own food.

Summer volunteer

There is an opportunity for a volunteer to assist the Department of Conservation on Matiu/Somes Island over the busy summer period each year.

Dates: From October to March (one month minimum stay).

Where: Matiu/Somes Island.

Number of volunteers required: 1

Requirements: Must be fit. Applicants should have an interest in natural and/or historic heritage and be confident dealing with members of the public.

Training: No training required.

Accommodation: Provided.

Food: Provided.

Eastbourne Forest Rangers volunteers

Volunteer ranger services on Matiu/Somes Island are provided by a team under the umbrella of the Eastbourne Forest Rangers group.

Dates: Each weekend and public holiday between Labour Weekend until about Easter.

Where: Matiu/Somes Island.

Number of volunteers required: Two rangers during these times to assist DOC staff with managing visitors to the island.

Requirements: Must be reasonably fit. Applicants should have an interest in natural and/or historic heritage and be confident dealing with members of the public.

Training: Training provided.

Accommodation: Available if volunteers wish to stay overnight.

What to bring: Gear list one.

Transport: By East by West ferry to the island. Fares paid for by DOC.

Other information: Volunteers meet the ferries, supervise the biosecurity checks on visitors' bags, brief visitors on the rules (such as non smoking, location of toilets, staying on the tracks, etc) and outline the history and wildlife of the island. In between ferries the volunteer rangers roam the island, being helpful to visitors and enhancing their enjoyment of their visit. Rangers also provide guided tours for pre-booked groups.
