Taranaki volunteer opportunities

Volunteer register

We require volunteers from time to time to help with projects such as tree planting, hut maintenance or helping out at the Visitor Centres.

The projects are mostly short term, perhaps a week at the most but if you have an interest in conservation and would like to be on the DOC Taranaki volunteer register please contact the volunteer co-ordinator.

Egmont National Park hut wardens are required, particularly over busy holiday weekends and the peak Christmas period. This work is short term too with most hut wardens working over the weekend in one of the huts.

DOC Taranaki also works with other organisations and they are always are on the lookout for volunteers.

The Rotakare Trust

This group has a predator fenced area of bush around Lake Rotakare near Eltham and there is a range of volunteer work to do there including setting out tracking tunnels, checking the traps and keeping the fence clear of branches that could provide bridges for pests. There's a working bee at Rotokare every Sunday morning and your help would most welcome.

The contact is Kara Prankerd kara.prankerd@gmail.com

The Taranaki Kiwi Trust

The Taranaki Kiwi Trust was formed to assist in the conservation of Kiwi throughout the region and volunteers are always needed to check trap lines and assist in other ways.

The East Taranaki Environment Trust

ETET is a registered charitable trust involved in a kiwi project at Purangi/ Matau/ Pouiatoa and the whio (blue duck) project based just outside Egmont National Park. This project supports DOC's work in the Park.

Volunteers help with many different conservation tasks such as bird counts, habitat restoration, weed control, pest control and trap and track maintenance. What you do depends partly on your skills and fitness level.

For general enquiries contact Karen & Bob Schumacher maungawhiri@farmside.co.nz or check out www.etet.org.nz for more details and a volunteers' calendar.
