Central North Island volunteer opportunities

Volunteers make a valuable contribution to the management of the conservancy. The work of volunteer groups over the past 30 years have kept the advancing Pinus contorta from reaching in from the Desert Road and Karioi Forest to claim the slopes of Mt. Ruapehu. Other volunteers help with:
  • Summer programmes of guided activities
  • Forest health monitoring
  • Hut wardening
  • Reception duties at the Whakapapa Visitor Centre
  • Kiwi sanctuary work
  • Teaching children the fine art of fly fishing
  • Carry out conservation planting and clean-up projects

Project Tongariro assist with coordination of volunteer activities in the Tongariro/Taupo Conservancy. Visit their website for more information and a calendar of activities or contact the Department of Conservation if you have an interest in becoming a conservation volunteer.
