New Zealand dotterel and shorebird advocacy and protection

There are a large number of sites in the Auckland region that are breeding and flocking sites for the endangered New Zealand dotterel and other shorebirds.

A number of these areas have established community groups working to protect, advocate for and monitor bird populations, such as the Omaha Shorebird Protection Group and the Te Arai Dotterel Protection Group. Other sites have one or two local residents undertaking activities such as taping off nesting sites and setting traps for the many predators endangered the birds' breeding success.
