Map of covenanted areas

This map shows the geographic spread of Nga Whenua Rahui projects throughout New Zealand, including Chatham Islands.

Some provinces such as Hawke's Bay have very little Maori owned indigenous forests or wetlands in their district.

The map indicates a considerable concentration of projects around Raukumara Forest Park in Eastern Bay of Plenty where the protection concept was widely accepted in the early years. It can be noted also that there is a concentration of projects in the Central North Island region and Tuwharetoa regions.

In the South Island, large areas of Maori owned land are under the South Island Landless Native Act (SILNA) and as such deal with a separate funding protection scheme.
