Kurow Island Restoration Group

The Kurow Town Enhancement Group has adopted 'Kurow Island' and is hoping to turn this old landfill site into a recreational area worth visiting.

Kurow Island, a 20 hectare island formed by braided river geomorphic processes, is located in the Waitaki River between the two historic bridges into Kurow. The island is easily accessible with beautiful backwaters, walking tracks, gentle braids and roads.

Project aim

The island was an historic landfill and waste area and our goal is to create a recreational and ecological area that benefits people, wildlife and the environment. The Island has been cleared of gorse and broom and grassed with further development planned. We are working to a plan and have turned a "community bad" into a "community good".

About the group

The Kurow Town Enhancement Group is a volunteer community group and recently we were successful in a grant from the Department of Conservation to enhance and plant the wetland area and riparian margins.

Receiving the Weedbuster Award 2008

This will involve more volunteer work days.

In 2008 we won the Canterbury Weedbuster Award for restoration of a public land. The development was made possible by the Meridian Energy Community Fund and the group appreciate the support and cooperative approach by the Department and Conservation and Waitaki District Council.
