Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust
Banks Peninsula is recognised for its unique biodiversity and landscape values nationally. In 2001 an enthusiastic group of locals set up the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust.
The trust's vision is of an environment where indigenous biodiversity flourishes within a healthy and evolving landscape, valued, protected and cared for by the local community.
They want to realise this vision through voluntary protection methods driven by local people, rather than rules and restrictions placed upon them.
They are working towards raising public and landowner awareness and education, by collaboration and partnership with agencies and organisations like DOC, by linking existing initiatives on Banks Peninsula, as well as developing a range of conservation options for landowners. The trust has become a covenanting body.
Aims: To protect indigenous biodiversity and encourage sustainable land management on Banks Peninsula.
Ways to get involved include: conservation covenants, biodiversity monitoring, tui restoration, guided walks in summer, volunteer restoration group.
