Ornithological Society of New Zealand - Bay of Plenty Branch

Banded New Zealand dotterel
The New Zealand Ornithological Society (OSNZ) is a national body that promotes the study, recording and enjoyment of birds in New Zealand. It regularly monitors bird species and populations across a wide range of habitats in the Bay of Plenty.
OSNZ carries out bird monitoring, reporting and banding. Shorebird census are undertaken annually across the main sites in the Bay, including Tauranga, Maketu/Little Waihi and Ohiwa.
Other ongoing projects the OSNZ is linked to are the monitoring and study of grey-faced petrels at Mount Maunganui, wildfowl and waterbird surveys in the Rotorua lakes and monitoring of New Zealand dotterel populations along the coast. Records of beach wrecks (birds washed ashore) are also collected and offer valuable information. Beach walks are organised at appropriate times when the weather conditions are right.
There is an annual programme of evening meetings and field trips with regular email updates.
