Mitre 10 Takahē Rescue

A letter from a ten year old Southland schoolgirl prompted Mitre 10 to join DOC in the fight to save the takahē.

Takahē are among New Zealand’s rarest birds and Mitre 10 supports their conservation through the Mitre 10 Takahē Rescue sponsorship.

The takahē has been brought back from the edge of extinction by the efforts of DOC and many volunteers. One of them, Sophie, a ten year old from Southland, was a volunteer at the Burwood Breeding Centre just out of Te Anau.

Sophie wrote a letter seeking support for the takahē and the letter came to the attention of Mitre 10 who felt Sophie spoke for many New Zealanders wanting to protect this bird.

The sponsorship was made possible by the New Zealand National Parks and Conservation Foundation.
