When do nominations get invited?

Nominations are invited at the start of years in which current members' terms end. The next opportunity for nominations to be invited is in 2014.

How are members appointed?

Members are appointed by the Minister of Conservation from the nominations received.

Nine of the 13 members are appointed on the recommendation of or in consultation with persons and organisations specified in the Conservation Act and four are appointed after the receipt of public nominations (section 6D(1)).

Members are appointed for a three year term.

How to be nominated

Any organisation or individual can nominate you for one of the four public positions. But remember to have them sign your nomination form!

What is expected of members?

Meetings

The NZCA meets every second month, usually for two days. These meetings take place in Wellington for the most part, but two meetings a year may take place outside Wellington. Those meetings may be associated with an inspection of a particular area or a matter under discussion with a conservation board.

Meeting preparation

Members are expected to read the papers distributed before each meeting and make such enquiries as they believe are necessary for them to contribute a view at the meeting.

Legislation and processes

Members must be prepared to work within and respect the legislative framework; understand and follow proper process; be aware of and manage conflicts of interest; be open-minded and prepared to consider a wide range of views; be able to debate issues objectively; be prepared to work for a consensus and respect the decisions of the collective; have the time to commit to the work of the NZCA; and take an equal share of the work it needs to or decides to undertake.

Committees

The NZCA establishes committees as required to undertake work outside NZCA meetings and from time to time it convenes groups to work on a submission in response to discussion documents or as follow-up to NZCA resolutions.

What experience is needed?

Experience working on a committee or board would be useful and an active interest in conservation issues is strongly recommended.

Before being nominated

Interested persons are strongly recommended to talk to current or former members of the NZCA to learn more about its work, expectation of members, and the time commitment which will be required, before lodging a nomination form or agreeing to be nominated.

Current conservation board members

If you are already a member of a conservation board and are appointed to the NZCA you will need to resign from the board.
