Make-up of the New Zealand Conservation Authority
The New Zealand Conservation Authority consists of thirteen members - five appointed after consultation with the Ministers of Maori Affairs, Tourism, and Local Government -one appointed on the nomination of Te Runanga O Ngai Tahu - three appointed on the recommendations of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Forest and Bird and Federated Mountain Clubs - and four appointed from public nominations.

When making appointments the Minister of Conservation is required by the Conservation Act to have regard to the interests of conservation, natural earth and marine sciences and recreation. In addition, Cabinet requires Ministers to have regard for diversity on boards, so other factors will be also be taken into consideration by the Minister of Conservation such as gender and geographic spread.
Members of the NZCA do not represent the person or organisation that nominated them for membership.
Once a member is appointed to the NZCA, s/he has equal rights and responsibilities under the Conservation Act with other members. S/he must be prepared to participate in all matters that come before the NZCA, unless a conflict of interests arises, in which case such a conflict needs to be declared.
Term of office
Members are appointed for a three-year term and may be re-appointed.
The current term of all NZCA members expires on 31 May 2014.
Fees and expenses
Members are paid a daily fee of $215. Reasonable expenses for travel, accommodation and meals are reimbursed or met as a direct charge to the NZCA.
