Kauri National Park one step closer
Media release: 11 February 2010
The New Zealand Conservation Authority decided today to kick off the formal process that could lead to a national park in Northland.
"Last October the Minister of Conservation asked the Authority to consider the merit of a national park in Northland" said Don Ross, Chairperson of the Authority. "The Authority identified the area which it considered suitable for investigation at this time for national park status" Don Ross continued "and then wrote to Te Roroa Manuwhenua Trust, the Northland Conservation Board, Northland Fish and Game Council and the affected local and regional authorities to see if they were prepared to give the proposal support in principle."
"I am pleased to say that all the parties were prepared to support the process proceeding to the next stage. That is a formal investigation of the values of the area by the Department of Conservation followed by the release its conclusions for public submissions" Don Ross said. "The Authority has therefore now formally requested the Director-General of Conservation to proceed and has advised the Minister of its decision".
