Waikato Conservation Board district
The Waikato Conservation Board's boundary matches the Waikato Conservancy boundary, with 270,000ha of public conservation land and 1,200km of coastline. It includes both the Waikato and the Coromandel regions and encompasses:
- large tracts of virgin forest (Moehau, Waihaha and Waipapa)
- extensive wetlands (Whangamarino, Kopuatai)
- estuaries (Kawhia, Thames Estuary)
- rare and threatened species (kokako, Archey's frog, Mahoenui giant weta)
- reptile and seabird communities on offshore islands
- important Maori and European historic resources
- karst landscapes and ecosystems
The range and diversity of habitats found in the conservancy are second only to Northland.
