The Nelson/Marlborough Conservation Board has a membership of 10 nominated by the public and appointed by the Minister of Conservation. Consistent with the Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998, at least one member is appointed on the nomination of Ngai Tahu.

Members profiles

Ross Hall (Chair), Dovedale

Ross has wide experience in the horticultural field, a background in outdoor recreation and interests in ecology and ornithology. He first joined the Board in October 2007 and was re-appointed for an additional term in 2011.

Ian Mitchell (Deputy Chair), Blenheim

Ian, Deputy Chair of the Board, is a viticulturalist from Marlborough's Wairau Plain with extensive experience in public land administration and management. Ian joined the Board in 2005. He also serves on the Molesworth Steering Committee.

Maurice Manawatu, Kaikoura

Maurice was first appointed on the recommendation of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu in 1998 and has continued to serve ever since. He is affiliated to Ngati Kuri and Ngai Tahu.He owns and operates a Maori tourism venture in Kaikoura and chairs the coastal guardians group Te Korowai o Te Tai o Marokura.

Gina Solomon, Kaikoura

Gina was appointed in 2006 on the recommendation of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu. She is affiliated to Ngai Tahu, Kurahaupo, Ngati Koata, Te Atiawa, and Ngati Toa. She follows in the tradition of her mother, Darcia Solomon, a Board member for many years and her late father John, a passionate conservationist.

Lynda Neame, Blenheim

Lynda is experienced in air quality and water quality issues, with an interest in waste treatment systems and the impact of discharges on receiving environments. She is involved with habitat maintenance and restoration projects, particularly Te Whanau Hou project at Grovetown Lagoon. Lynda is also involved with iwi and Forest & Bird and joined the Board in 2007.

Joe Puketapu, Blenheim

Joe, who joined the Board in September 2009, lives in Blenheim. He has experience in providing an iwi perspective on conservation issues. He is the Chair of Waikawa Marae at Picton, a Director of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, a Trustee of Te Atiawa Manawhenua Trust, a Trustee of the Kimi Hauora Public Health Organisation, and Chair of the Iwi Health Board. His iwi affiliations are with Te Atiawa Nui Tonu.

Mairangi Reiher, Golden Bay

Mairangi is of Ngati Tama/Te Atiawa/Te Arawa iwi. Her interests are centred around the preservation of cultural sites, waahi tapu and the conservation of natural flora and fauna. She is currently a trustee on the board of the Tasman Bays Heritage Trust and an iwi representative for the Nelson Provincial Museum. She is a committee member of the Golden Bay Museum and is also on the board of the Ngati Tama Trust. She is involved with the Whakapapa Komiti with Ngati Tama, Te Atiawa and NRAIT as well as serving on the Manawhenua Ki Mohua and Onetahua Marae committees. She has worked with DOC in translocating kiwi and in providing input to management plans

Joy Shorrock, Motueka

Joy was appointed to the Board in December 2010. She is an active member of Te Awhina Marae and is a traditional Maori weaver and a teacher of this artform. She is also Deputy Chair of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board and a member of the Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust, the Motueka Museum Board and the Te Awhina Marae Board. Joy has a particular interest in the preservation of New Zealand's natural resources. Her iwi affiliations are Te Atiawa, Ngati Rarua, Ngati Tama and Ngati Koata ki te Tau Ihu.

Sue Brown, Collingwood

Sue Brown farms with her partner. They have a dairy farm in Ferntown, Golden Bay and a pastoral grazing block in Stanley Brook in the Motueka Valley. She is actively involved in the Aorere Catchment Group with NZ Landcare Trust and is currently Dairy Section Chair for Federated Farmers Golden Bay province. She was appointed to the Board in December 2010.

Bob Dickinson, Nelson

Bob has extensive experience in management and director positions including as CEO of Tasman District Council for 17 years. He is a keen user of public conservation land, being an active tramper, skier, boatie and climber, with a special interest in geology and history. He was appointed to the Board in December 2010.
