East Coast Bay of Plenty Conservation Board members
The Minister of Conservation appointed the following people to the East Coast Bay of Plenty Conservation Board:

Joe Doherty of Murupara
Joe is a self-employed Management Consultant and Director of Kitea Developments Ltd based in Murupara with extensive experience in human resources, policy analysis, and working with Iwi Trusts. Joe has tribal affiliations to Tuhoe and enjoys hunting, canoeing and tramping. Term expires on 30 June 2013.
Hera Smith of Murupara
Hera works in Rotorua as an Executive Officer at the Te Arawa Lakes Trust (formerly Te Arawa Maori Trust Board) and was nominated by the General Manager, Roku Mihinui. Hera works with a diverse range of people, hapu, iwi, local and regional authorities and government departments regarding the Rotorua Lakes. A former DOC employee, Hera has a working knowledge of biodiversity, Treaty Settlement implementation and recreation roles, building relationships with communities and key stakeholders, freshwater fisheries and DOC conservation policies. Hera's tribal affiliations include Ngati Manawa, Te Arawa, Tuwharetoa and Te Ati Haunui a Paparangi. Term expires on 31 August 2013.
Ian Pirani of Katikati
Ian is a self-employed farmer with international experience in farm and conservation advisory work. Ian is a keen deer, pig, goat and game bird hunter and is a breeder and trainer of gun-dogs with a Diploma in Business Management from Otago University. The Bay of Plenty Conservancy believes Ian would provide a key farming perspective that is currently lacking on the Bay of Plenty Conservation Board. Term expires 30 June 2013.
Michael Hayden of Waihi
Michael retired as a District Councillor at the last elections after serving 21 years in local government with the Hauraki District Council. He has been involved with many Boards, Trusts and community groups over the years. A former school principal, Michael is actively involved in governance and management of eco-tourism in Waihi and Northern Kaimai areas. Michael enjoys recording and preserving ecological and recreational heritage and is a promoter of family recreational pursuits. Term expires on 30 June 2012.
Neuton Lambert of Tuai
Neuton was nominated by the Putaio Trust of Tuhoe, and endorsed by Lake Waikaremoana Hapu Trust. He has been involved with various boards over the years and worked for DOC for around five years as field manager at Aniwaniwa (Lake Waikaremoana). Neuton's interests include hunting and gardening. Term expires 30 June 2013.
Derek Gosling of Whakatane
Derek is an Environmental Manager for the Tuhoe Putaiao Trust. Derek brings a vast background in areas such as forest restoration, pest control, ecological assessement and restoration as well as fire management. Derek worked for DOC from 1987 to 1999 at the Whakatane Field Centre. Term expires 30 June 2013.
Christopher Marsh of Whangara
Christopher is a third term board member, nominated by the Ngati Konohi Whangara Marae Committee. He previously served two terms on the East Coast Hawke's Bay Conservation Board, latterly as Deputy Chair, and was a pioneer of new media in the UK, working in corporate consulting, broadcast television and entertainment. He encourages conservation education and a modern role for conservation boards. Term expires on 30 June 2013.
Vicki Thorpe of Gisborne
Vicki is a qualified barrister and solicitor who has considerable experience sitting on boards and committees. She has a strong commitment to the East Coast community and is passionate about the preservation of coastal and marine resources. Term expires on 30 June 2013.
Ken Raureti of Rotorua
Ken is a self employed business consultant and mediator. He has professional and strategic leadership and governance experience, gleaned from roles such as Manager/Advocate for EMA, Chief Mediator of the Department of Labour's Mediation Service, Member of Employment Relations Authority and appointments to several Boards. He is currently Chairman of Ruawahia 2B Trust, a Director on CNI Iwi Holdings Ltd, the New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, Te Mana o Ngati Rangitihi, and Chairman of the Te Arawa Lakes Trust Komiti Whakahaere. He has extensive networks and professional relationships within the business community, tourism sector, iwi authorities, local authorities and government departments.
Ken's iwi affiliations include Ngati Rangitihi, Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Pikiao, Te Arawa, Whakatohea, Ngati Ruatakena, and Ngapuhi nui tonu. Whanau and whanaungatanga values are important to him and into that he weaves his passion for the outdoors and our environment. Term expires on 30 June 2014.
Victor Walker of Tolaga Bay
Residing in Tolaga Bay and with a current role as Chief Executive Officer for Te Runanga o Ngati Porou, Victor has a great commitment to his family, marae and to hapu and tribal affairs. Victor brings an in depth knowledge of traditional East Coast histories and is key facilitator and co-ordinator for numerous local hapu, community and tribal hui. He has an MA in Maori Studies from Massey University and a Dip. Teaching from the Christchurch College of Education and was a Te Reo Maori tutor at the now EIT Tairawhiti polytechnic for 12 years. He has also lectured at Massey University and for Waikato University. Victor is currently Chairperson to two Ahuwhenua Trusts, a trustee and marae secretary. Term expires 30 June 2014.
John Wauchop of Gisborne
John lives in Gisborne and is a Regional Advisor with the Walking Access Commission. With previous experience for 21 years as Manager of Regional Ahuwhenua Trophy winner, Marotiri Farm Partnership at Tokomaru Bay, John has an extensive agricultural background and has also served as Chair on the National Sheep and Beef Council. In his current advisory role, John is keen to get out and about in the community, helping to solve access issues in the Gisborne and Bay of Plenty areas. Term expires on 30 June 2014.
Malcolm Whitaker of Ohope
As an Ohope resident, Malcolm is currently a fourth term member for the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, and is on a number of committees, including a role as Chair. Malcolm is qualified to sit on RMA hearings, and has an in depth knowledge of environmental management, policy, planning and annalysis, consensus building and cultural awareness. Employed as a Naturopath/Osteo-Therapist for the last 28 years, he also has a passion for protecting the environment, and giving his time on a number of community based projects. He is currently Chair of the Whakatane Kiwi Trust. Term expires on 30 June 2014.
