Pukaha Mount Bruce
The work, which is mainly practical and field based, includes the ongoing upkeep of visitor sites, tracks, accommodation, and sundry other tasks. All the projects have conservation values and often could not be completed without the assistance of volunteers.
The Pukaha Mount Bruce Conservation Volunteers programme is based on volunteers participating for a minimum of three weeks and maximum of three months.
What type of work is involved?
We are looking for people who enjoy the outdoors (in any weather), are interested in NZ's wildlife, are happy and willing to undertake sometimes laborious jobs like aviary maintenance, and predator control in steep country. The work involves a variety of tasks such as weeding, planting, pest trapping, and observing and monitoring captive and wild birds. Other work may include kiwi and kokako tracking, and track marking.
What skills may be useful?
A high level of fitness is required. Good observational skills and the ability to accurately record information is important. You will need to be able to work independently and also as part of a team. Good English speaking ability is required, and experience in conservation programmes and captive animal husbandry desired.
Accommodation
On site accommodation is available in return for the voluntary hours you work during your stay. You will be expected to do your share of cleaning and tidying the house and surrounding area.
