Whanganui National Park hut wardens

Hut Wardens are required over the summer “Great Journey” season (October-April) inclusive, at John Coull Hut within Whanganui National Park. Duties are light, but involve checking canoeist ‘Great Journey’ passes, public relations, keeping the hut clean and tidy and maintaining a daily radio schedule. Separate wardens quarters are available and the hut has gas facilities including a refrigerator/freezer. Access is by Department of Conservation jetboat from Pipiriki.

Hut Wardens may also be required at peak periods at Omaru Hut. This hut has gas cooking facilities but no refrigerator and there are no separate wardens quarters. However there is a lock up cupboard available for storage. Access is from Kohi Saddle in Eastern Taranaki along the Matemateaonga Track and takes about 90 minutes.
