Tongariro National Park hut wardens

When:

Periods form 6 to 8 weeks, from just before Labour weekend (late October) to Queens Birthday (first Monday in June).

Where:

Great Walk huts on the Tongariro Northern Circuit.

The Tongariro National Park is a volcanic, alpine Park.

Based at a mountain hut for 5 nights at a time, 2 nights off.  Duties include giving out information including weather forecasts, hut and track cleanliness, contact for search and rescue, hut and track maintenance, hut and camp pass checks, hut statistics reporting. One week training and orientation prior to start.

Fitness/Skills:

  • Average to above average fitness required.
  • Good comprehension of English.
  • Knowledge of German an advantage.
  • People interaction skills.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Alpine experience preferred.
  • Clean driving licence preferred.
  • Empathy with backpackers.

Accommodation:

Own quarters in the mountains.

Shared accommodation provided in town for days off.

Food:

Food allowance for work days.

What to bring:

  • Tramping gear for hot and cold conditions.
  • Backpack, tramping boots, sleeping bag etc.

Bookings:

  • Bookings essential after receiving information pack.
  • Only 3 to 5 volunteers needed per period (over 200 enquiries per season!).
