Friends of Flora community restoration group

Friends of Flora Inc. (FoF) is a non-profit community-based group of highly-motivated volunteers dedicated to bringing the birdsong back to the Flora Stream area of Kahurangi National Park.

To this end the Friends, in partnership with DOC, have installed 10 traplines of nearly 700 traps targeting stoats and rats from the stream edge to the alpine peaks.  From humble beginnings in 2001, FoF have expanded their operations, suppressing predators in the Flora and allowing numbers of small birds to rise steadily.

Whio, FoF's emblem bird, are again breeding in the Flora Stream.  In 2007 the first successful nesting attempt in a decade resulted in three whio ducklings fledging. FoF are now planning a major trapline expansion west towards the Cobb Reservoir and are working with DOC towards the re-establishment of the great spotted kiwi.
