Brief description: A grant of $3,000 to the Bream Head Conservation Trust to assist with the revegetation of Bream Head Scenic Reserve located at the end of Whangarei Head. The grant will enable the Trust to puchase over 8,000 native ecosourced plants for a 1.5 hectare area in the reserve. This is in addition to the 5 hectares the Trust has already revegetated. The Bream Head Scenic Reserve supports many nationally and regionally threatened plants, including the large-leaved milk tree.

Organisation: Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society - North Shore Branch

Brief description: A grant of up to $14,500 to the North Shore Branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society to assist with weed control and native restoration plantings in the Tuff Crater Reserve. The reserve is on the edges of an estuary within a volcanic crater and the coastal broadleaved forest present is considered ecologically significant. Several threatened species exist in the area, including New Zealand and banded dotterels.

Project name: Restoration of Mangawhai Distal Spit and Wildlife Refuge 

Organisation: Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society 

Funded: $88,950 

Brief description:
A grant of up to $88,950 to the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society to assist with their project to restore an 11 hectare area of dunelands at Distal Spit, Mangawhai Wildlife Refuge. The grant will specifically assist with the purchase of native ecosourced dune plants, fetiliser, and windbreak fencing which will enable the for-dunes to restore.  The Refuge is a nationally and internationally significant nesting area for seabirds, including the New Zealand fairy tern, Northern New Zealand and banded dotterels, variable oyster catcher, and Caspian and white fronted terns. The Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society was formed in 1990 and is made up of the approximately 3,500 ratepayers in Mangawhai. The funding received for this project complements the Society's own contribution. This project is part of the Society's larger goal of restoring all of the Mangawhai Harbour to its past prime state.

Brief description: A grant of $11,785 to the Friends of McKenzie Reserve to assist with the purchase of over 1,000 native ecosourced plants for the McKenzie Reserve revegetation project on Waiheke Island. The Friends of McKenzie Reserve is a volunteer group of 70 members who are dedicated to restoring this Reserve. Ageing pine trees were removed from the reserve in 2006, and the Friends and the Auckland City Council are working in partnership to restore the 4 hectare cleared area to its native vegetation.

Brief description: A grant of $43,000 to Kaipatiki Project Incorporated to assist with restoration plantings in the Witheford Scenic Reserve, Auckland. The group is restoring the ecologically important coastal forest remnant in this urban environment. The area is home to kereru, ruru, fantail and tui. Kaipatiki Project will be undertaking weed control and restoration plantings, with community planting days scheduled from June to October.

Brief description: A grant of up to $7,000 to Okiwi School, Great Barrier Island to assist with the Pateke Restoration project on the island. The grant will assist with the purchase of native ecosourced plants for restoring wetland areas in the Okiwi Recreational Reserve and Conservation Area. Pateke (brown teal), a threatened species, are breeding in this area and the school's project will improve their wetland habitat. The grant will also assist with the purchase of tools, to enable the students to undertake this work themselves.

Brief description: A grant of $20,000 to the Friends of Te Toki Reserve and Okahuiti Wetland to assist with the purchase of 3,000 native ecosourced plants. For the past 2 years the Friends have been working on weed eradication in the Te Toki Reserve, Waiheke Island. This grant will enable the Friends to extend this restoration project and undertake restoration plantings over a 2 hectare area in this coastal forest wetland and saltmarsh reserve.

Brief description: A grant of $6,050 to the Kawhia Harbour Protection Society to assist with the restoration of an area within the Kawhia Cemetery Reserve, with the assistance of Otorohanga District Council. This grant will assist with fencing the area to be restored, to assist in preventing illegal dumping. In addition weed control will be carried out for the restoration site and 1,000 native ecosourced plants will be planted.  These plants, along with plants funded by Te Hine Ngairo o Kawhia Trust, Otorohanga District Council, and Native Forests Restoration Trust, will be planted by Society members and volunteers to extend the reforestation project undertaken by Te Hinengairo o Kawhia Trust last year.

Bay of Plenty

Project name: Monika Lanham Reserve Restoration Project 

Organisation: Rotary Club of Kawerau Incorporated

Brief description: A grant of up to $80,000 to the Rotary Club of Kawerau to assist with the Monika Lanham Reserve Restoration Project in Kawerau. The grant will supplement the Rotary Club's own contributions, and that of the Kawerau District Council. The grant will specifically assist with the purchase of native ecosourced plants (predominantly kanuka) to help revegetate this urban bush area, and assist with weed control. Currently, the restoration site is infested with exotic weeds which the Rotary Club and the Council will eradicate. The restoration project with enhance the habtitat of the threatened native mistletoe found at the site. The project will also provide links to other natural areas, such as Ruruanga Stream, Tarawera River, Putauaki (Mt Edgecumbe) and the Paramahana Scenic Reserve. Members of the public will be able to get involved in this project through community planting days run by the Rotary Club.

Welllington

Project name: Otaihanga Oxbow Restoration 

Organisation: Friends of the Waikanae River 

Funded: $40,325 

Brief description: A grant of $40,325 to the Friends of the Waikanae River to assist with restoring the margins of the Waikanae River at the Otaihanga Oxbow. The restoration of the Otaihanga Oxbow will provide a link between other restoration sites on the river, and will contribute towards the vision of creating a wildlife corridor all the way along the Waikanae River. The grant will supplement the group's own contributions and will assist in purchasing over 6,000 native ecosourced plants, and weed control for the planting area. Kapiti Coast District Council will support the Group's project by removing willows and other weeds. The Friends of the Waikanae RIver hold working bees twice monthly, and members of the public are welcome to attend.

Brief description: A grant of up to $24,074 to the Riversdale Dune Management Group to assist with the restoration of dunes at Riversdale in the Wairarapa. Specifically, the grant will assist with the purchase of over 9,000 plants to restore native sand binding species to the dune system such as spinifex, pingao and matagouri. The planting area will be fenced to protect the new plantings from 4 wheel drive vehicles.

Organisation: Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society - Upper Hutt Branch

Brief description: A grant of up to $26,000 to the Upper Hutt branch of the Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society to assist with the Moehau Stream Riparian Restoration Project in Moehau Park, Upper Hutt. This project is an ongoing project, with the Society and community having already undertaken extensive weed removal and planting 5,000 native plants. The next phase is the removal of willows, which this grant will assist with. Willow removal will allow the Society, community and local Pony club to undertake further resoration plantings.

Brief description: A grant of $35,592 to the Central Otago Ecological Trust to assist with the restoration of the Mokomoko Dryland Sanctuary in the Aldinga Conservation Area, near Alexandra. The grant will assist with the purchase of 1,000 native ecosourced shrub and tussock plants, and rabbit proof fencing of the planting area. The Trust and volunteers will be undertaking over 380 hours of weed control and site preparation, as well as contributing towards the costs of the fencing and plants. The Trust is dedicated to the restoration of the special flora and fauna of the Central Otago Aldinga Conservation Area, which in this harsh environment, means going to such lengths as hand watering plants as the situation demands.

Brief description: A grant of $4,894 to the Gore and District Amenities Charitable Trust to assist with a restoration planting project at the site of an old landfill in East Gore. Specifically, the grant will assist with the purchase of over 1,500 native ecosourced plants for restoring the site to native forest. The Trust is dedicated to establishing areas of native biodiversity within the Gore urban area to encourage birdlife to return. The 12.6 hectare landfill site provides an ideal opportunity to do just this.

Brief description: A grant of $25,731 to Hokonui Runanga Incorporated to assist with the Mataura Te Awa Mataitai Restoration project on the banks of the Mataura River on Old Coach Road, Southland.  The grant will assist with preparing the site for planting and the purchase of 1,500 native ecosourced plants to restore the river bank habitat.  The project, while restoring riparian habitat, will also contribute to the health of the river by providing shading for native fish, and lecological inkages between the land and water.
