Franz Josef Glacier

Map of New Zealand showing the West Coast region of the South Island.

Franz Josef Glacier is located in Westland National Park on the West Coast, 5 kilometres from Franz Josef township.

The Franz Josef Glacier (Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere) is ideal for a field trip offering students a rare opportunity to experience a dynamic glacial environment, in a temperate environment, while being within easy driving and walking distance from the main highway.

The environmental issues and recreation opportunities at Franz Josef present a range of learning experiences to achieve a range of curriculum objectives. At Franz Josef students can take walks through the glacier valley and observe features carved out by this giant sheet of ice.
