Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve is 22 km north-east of Rotorua on Okataina Road, off State Highway 30.

The reserve is a pristine natural area with native bush down to the waters edge. It is rich in birdlife and contains fine examples of rimu, totara, rata and kahikatea.

There are numerous walks in the Lake Okataina area. The scenic reserve has a number of picnic spots, and the lake is safe for swimming.

This resource is designed to be used alongside the Bay of Plenty forests or Lake Okataina field trip resources, and provides background information of the area, and points out the special features and cultural history more specific to Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve.
