Karangahake Gorge

Map of New Zealand showing the Bay of Plenty region.

Karangahake Gorge Historical Walkway is situated on SH 2 between Paeroa and Waihi. The walkway follows part of the old railway line that was closed in 1979, allowing the public access to historical sites associated with gold mining from the 1870s through to the 1950s.

The region combines gold mining history and natural beauty, much of it accessible through a variety of walks.

The historic walkways through Karangahake Gorge offer opportunities for studying resource management issues related to gold mining and water quality.
