Award aims

  • To acknowledge the good work that students are doing for conservation
  • To encourage other students/classes/groups/schools to get more involved in conservation
  • To encourage schools to become actively involved with their community, contribute to the well-being of NZ, and explore future-focused issues like sustainability and conservation.

Eligibility

The Toroa Award is open to all schools (Year 1-13 and early childhood centres) in Coastal Otago Area (which is Dunedin City, Clutha District, and Waitaki District south of Waitaki River and inland to Duntroon).

2011 winners

Last year's winning project was Conservation Pathway Kaikorai Valley College. Teacher Dr Simon McMillan has involved his school and numerous community groups and agencies in a long-term project to enhance the environment of Kaikorai Stream.

Runners up were:

  • Mosgiel Central Kindergarten for "Our sustainable journey".
  • Tahuna Intermediate School student Clair Caird for her science project investigating the impact of visitors on wildlife at Sandfly Bay.

How to enter

You can self-nominate, or nominate a school, class, student or teacher. It's a good idea to talk to the teacher before completing a nomination.
