Hawke's Bay Environment Action Awards
The Environment Action Awards are held every two years to celebrate people and organisations in Hawke's Bay who care for their environment and take action on sustainable homes.
The awards are jointly supported by Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Napier City Council, Hastings District Council, the Department of Conservation and Wairoa and Central Hawke's Bay District Councils.
The winners of the 2011 Environmental Action Awards are:
DOC Natural History, Heritage Conservation Award
Winner: Simon Hall
For his work on restorating his Maungataniwha properties, kaka beak and kiwi recovery work, and assistance with ecological studies.
Highly commended: Te Mahia School
This Enviroschool is involved in beach and stream clean ups, planting for stream enhancement and wetland protection, and publicising environmental concerns
Sus'd Programme Excellence Award
Winner: Curtain Bank Hawke's Bay
For its innovative recycling programme, washing, ironing and adapting donated curtains and redistributing them to homes to provide added insulation and comfort.
Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF) Project Excellence Award
Winner: Camberley Kindergarten
The kindergarten used its LEAF funding to develop a vegetable and fruit garden for the benefit of the children and their families. It also demonstrates other sustainable practises, such as composting and worm farms.
DOC Catherine Tiffen Volunteer Award
Winner: Teresa Hurst
For her conservation work in the Blowhard Bush Scenic Reserve, which includes pest control, track clearing, and educating volunteers for the successful eradication programme.
Community Environment Award
Winner: Cape Sanctuary
The Cape Sanctuary project involves more than 600 volunteers tackling a variety of tasks from weeding and planting, to fencing and bird feeding. This nationally-significant sanctuary is larger than Kapiti Island with an extensive bird recovery and protection programme. More than 75,000 thousand native trees have been planted for food and habitat.
Outstanding Contribution to the Environment Award
Winner: Kepa Toa
For his tireless commitment to planting and caring for the Maraetotara River riparian area, involvement with Cape Sanctuary, teaching and educating youth in environmental protection and championing Maori medicine.
Highly commended: John Cheyne
For his extensive contribution to the environment through his work with DOC and Fish and Game, as well as his personal interest in ecological protection and recovery.
The next awards will be in 2013.
