They are scenic stopping points or destinations along iconic journeys via state highways 73, 8 and 80, and the TranzAlpine Railway. Recent developments indicate the potential for increasing numbers of visitors and tourism-based activity in these places.

We want to hear from you

  • What do you see as DOC's role in the management and protection of landscape values given there is multiple ownership across these lands?
  • Do you have any suggestions on how to strengthen whole-community approaches to protecting these places? The O Tu Wharekai project models some of these ways of working; can you see this happening in other places?
  • How do we tell stories in meaningful ways that increases appreciation for historic and cultural sites such as Kura Tawhiti/Castle Hill and Cave Stream in the Waimakairi Basin?
  • How do we manage the multiple values of places like Kura Tawhiti/Castle Hill while protecting both the values and the quality of visitor experiences?
