Foothills forests - Canterbury CMS draft place

Forest stream.
Forest remnants are local treasures for Canterbury families to visit

The Foothill forests draft place addresses all the lowland and hill country reserves, conservation areas and forest remnants. It could include some limestone areas such as Nape Nape in North Canterbury.

These remnants provide clues to how much has been lost from the region. Many of these places are close to townships and highly valued by locals for recreation activities such as tramping, camping and hunting; for example Peel Forest and Talbot Forest. Several community groups are actively involved in restoration of these forest remnants such as the Talbot Forest Working Group.

This draft place could discuss a proposed conservation park in the foothills of the Hunters Hills/Albury Range area.

We want to hear from you

  • Do you have any suggestions on how to strengthen whole-community approaches on managing these public conservation lands and other forest remnants?
  • Most of these are easily accessible for weekend adventures off the normal tourist track - how important are they to you and your family? What level of development is appropriate in these places?
  • Threatened species such as long-tailed bats/pekapeka and limestone plants don't recognise land ownership boundaries - how can we work together to protect them?
