Conservation and forest parks - Canterbury CMS draft place

Canterbury has seven conservation parks south of Arthur's Pass National Park, with their own distinctive values, most situated within the high country.

They protect a wide range of ecosystems, from the dry beech forest of Craigieburn, to the lakes and wetlands of Hakatere and the tussockgrasslands of Ruataniwha.

They are the recreational playground for local and wider communities, offering opportunities for walking and tramping, fishing and hunting, mountain biking, horse riding, skiing and more!

We want to hear from you

  • There are multiple values over huge areas of land - how do we set management outcomes that balance the sometimes conflicting needs of use and protection?
  • Most of our conservation parks have been created in the last ten years - what do you see is their potential in providing for a wide range of recreation activities?
  • Would you like to see conservation parks extended to cover additional conservation areas within the high country?
