The coastal margin of Canterbury includes a number of key sites for conservation under a wide variety of land ownership, highly valued by locals for their biodiversity, recreation and cultural values.

Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere and Kaitorete Spit is a high priority site, with a formalised partnership agreement with Ngāi Tahu under the Te Waihora Joint Management Plan (2005).

This draft place may also include inshore marine and Hector's dolphin environments, and near-shore islands off Banks Peninsula and North Canterbury such as Motunau Island Nature Reserve.

We want to hear from you

  • What do you see as DOC's role in the management of coastal margins given there is multiple ownership of coastal lands?
  • What do you see are our obligations towards migratory species, such as godwit/kuaka, when they are visiting our coastal margins?
  • Do you have any suggestions on how to strengthen whole-community approaches to protecting our coastal margins?
  • How do we balance providing access for recreational activities while protecting the habitat for birds and inanga/whitebait?
