Banks Peninsula/Horomaka - Canterbury CMS draft place

This draft place could include collective outcomes and specific area outcomes for Lake Forsyth/Wairewa catchment, Akaroa Harbour, Te Moutere ki Whakaraupo and Pōhatu Marine Reserve.

Banks Peninsula is nationally recognised for its unique biodiversity and landscape values; a network of pocket-sized remnant reserves provide habitat for birdlife and inspiration for restoration.

Waitaha, Ngāti Mamoe and Ngāi Tahu all lived in or moved through the area. By 1820 Ngāi Tahu had many settlements and pā around the peninsula. Today, they manage islands and reserves on the Peninsula often in partnership with DOC, and have initiated conservation projects such as the kereru recovery project.

Akaroa Harbour

The tourist town of Akaroa is unique as the site of the only attempted settlement by the French in New Zealand. It's the base for several marine mammal concession activities.

In 2001 an enthusiastic group of locals set up the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust. The trust's vision is of an environment where indigenous biodiversity flourishes within a healthy and evolving landscape, valued, protected and cared for by the local community.

We want to hear from you

  • What do you think is DOC's role in partnerships with Christchurch City Council, community groups, business and iwi?
  • DOC has a strong marine and coastal edge focus to our current work on the Peninsula - can you see ways to strengthen community involvement in this work?
  • Do you have any creative ideas on how DOC and Ngai Tahu together can best manage the islands and reserves around the peninsula?
  • Quail Island/Ōtamahua is a recreation reserve with a big ecological restoration project and multiple historic and cultural stories. What do you see is the long-term vision for this island?
