We are currently in an information-gathering phase to help support the development of a draft Canterbury CMS.

Public notification of the draft Canterbury Conservation Management Strategy (CMS) is anticipated for June 2012. This begins the statutory phase of its review.

It will be widely advertised. The Department will do its best to let everyone who has participated in the process to date, know when this happens, provided your contact details are known.

Copies of the draft Canterbury CMS will be available on this website, and CDs and printed copies can be seen at DOC offices throughout Canterbury.

The process then follows Section 17F of the Conservation Act 1987. DOC will:

  • Call for submissions on the draft CMS
  • Hold hearings
  • Summarise submissions
  • Revise the draft CMS in light of those submissions
  • Forward the revised draft CMS to the Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board.

The Board will consider the draft Canterbury CMS and if satisfied, recommend its approval to the New Zealand Conservation Authority (NZCA). The Minister of Conservation also has the opportunity to make comments before final approval by the NZCA.
