Auckland Conservation Management Strategy review

The Department's Auckland Conservancy is reviewing the Auckland Conservation Management Strategy (CMS).

The current Auckland CMS was due to expire in 2005, but has been given an extension until 30 June 2010 to allow for a review to be completed.

Please note:

The public notification of the draft Auckland CMS has been delayed. The reason for the delay is so the Auckland Conservancy can monitor the progress of the draft Waikato CMS. The draft Waikato CMS has gone through the public submission process and is currently being revised.

The timing of the public notification of the draft Auckland CMS will be advised at a later date. We would like to encourage your participation in the Auckland CMS review process once the draft CMS is notified.

About the CMS

A CMS sets the direction for how the places that DOC manages on your behalf (public conservation lands and waters) should be managed over the next ten years. It's about how people like you can support the conservation task. So your views on the places you visit, value or treasure are really important.

A CMS covers issues such as:

Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve, Devonport.
Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve, Devonport

  • Protecting forests and wetlands from pests
  • Helping threatened species
  • Creating marine protected areas
  • Restoring historic and cultural sites
  • Providing visitor facilities and recreational opportunities
  • Enabling appropriate commercial activities
  • Assisting communities with their conservation projects

The CMS will also identify places in the Auckland Conservancy where significant conservation effort should be directed over the next ten years.

CMS review process

The Auckland CMS review has three phases:

1. Informal discussion and feedback. The first step in the process is to hear your views and suggestions, which will help inform the draft Auckland CMS. With the draft Auckland CMS nearing completion, the informal discussion and feedback phase has closed.

2. Statutory consultation. This is when a draft CMS is available for public comment, submissions are sought and received, and hearings may be held.

3. Consideration and approval. The Auckland Conservation Board, the New Zealand Conservation Authority (NZCA) and the Minister of Conservation consider submissions and how they have been adopted before the NZCA approves the CMS.
