Waikato Conservation Management Strategy review
The post-notification of drafting the Waikato CMS has been put on hold until early 2010. The Department's National Office is undertaking further work on the strategic framework for CMS's at a national level to ensure consistency around the level of detail included in these documents.
This work involves looking at Conservation General Policy requirements and considering requests from submitters for a higher level of detail than has been included in consultative drafts. This work is to better understand what communities are seeking and how it should best be provided.
A revised timeframe will be provided once we have received direction from the Department's National Office. We would like to thank all of those people and organisations who submitted feedback on the draft CMS and reassure you that all submissions on the draft CMS will be retained.
Eighty nine submissions were received and a summary of submissions can be viewed here.

Progress
Hearings were held in April and May 2009 for those submitters who had confirmed they wished to be heard.
The draft document is now in the revision phase, taking account of the written and verbal submissions. It is anticipated that the revised draft document could be submitted to the NZCA around October 2009.

What is a CMS?
A CMS sets the direction for how places DOC manages on your behalf (public conservation land and water) should be managed over the next 10 years.
It covers issues such as protecting forests and wetlands from pests, helping threatened species, restoring historic and cultural sites, developing visitor recreation opportunities, marine protection, working with communities on conservation projects and the use of conservation land for appropriate commercial activities.
It also identifies particularly special places in the Waikato Conservancy where significant conservation effort should be directed over the next ten years. These places will be chosen for their signficant ecological, historic, recreation, community or cultural values.
The review process
1. Informal discussion and feedback (This process was undertaken with agencies, communities and iwi during March and April 2008).
2. Comments are considered and the draft CMS is prepared (Done).
3.Statutory consultation: the draft CMS is publically notified and formal community consultation and written submissions are sought and hearings may be held. (Submissions closed 19 January 2009 and hearings were held April/May 2009).
4. Draft CMS is revised by DOC to take account of submissions (Currently being undertaken).
5. Consideration and approval: The Waikato Conservation Board, the New Zealand Conservation Authority (NZCA) and the Minister of Conservation consider submissions and how they have been adopted before the NZCA finally approves the CMS.
