Stewart Island robin
The submission period for the draft Stewart Island/Rakiura Conservation Management Strategy and draft Rakiura National Park Management Plan was open until 5pm, 11 March 2009.
This submission period was longer than the two months required by legislation due to it running over a busy time of the year.
Background
In September 2006, the Department of Conservation advertised its intent to prepare the first management plan for Rakiura National Park and review the existing Stewart Island/Rakiura Conservation Management Strategy. The decision was made to run both planning processes together in order to address conservation management on Stewart Island/Rakiura as a whole.
A discussion document was released, asking key questions and requesting feedback on what people value about Stewart Island/Rakiura as well as feedback on key management issues. The summary of feedback responses document summarises the feedback responses received from the discussion document.
Feedback indicated that there were important places on the island that needed to be discussed more fully. As a result, a series of public workshops were organised during 2007 and early 2008 to discuss the following subjects:
- Ulva Island
- Mason Bay
- Port Pegasus
- Hunting / hunter huts
- The northern / southern / Halfmoon Bay / Oban parts of the island
The summary of public workshops document summarises the discussions that took place as part of these workshops.
The Rakiura Planning Team has provided regular updates to interested people and organisations through newsletters.
