Background information
Mount Aspiring National Park is important nationally and internationally. Visitors have a great affinity for it and recognise its special features, such as its feeling of remoteness and natural quiet, attributes that have been diminished or lost in other areas.

Often thought of as an Otago Park, nearly half of its 355 543 hectares are west of the Main Divide, in DOC’s West Coast Conservancy, contributing to both its diversity and the range of recreation it can offer.
A National Park's key role is to protect the values that make it special and to see that people enjoy those values. A management plan's role is to provide guidance on managing conflicting demands. The park faces a range of issues. These are addressed in the draft plan and include: aircraft use; visitor pressures in some places; protecting natural quiet; whether there should be commercial activity in remote and wilderness areas; preserving biodiversity in the face of threats from introduced pests – plants and animals.
This draft plan is an important document. Once it has been through the public consultation process, then amended and finally approved, it will guide the way the park is managed for the following ten years.
Consultation and notification
The park’s last management plan was approved in 1994. In revising it, over 200 individuals and groups were consulted, covering a very wide range of views that prove the amount of interest there is in Mount Aspiring National Park and its future.
After some years of preparation, the draft Mount Aspiring National Park Management Plan Review was publicly notified on 4 April 2009. Submissions on the draft plan can be made until 30 June 2009.

Hard copies can be viewed at all Department of Conservation Conservancy offices throughout New Zealand, at the National Office in Wellington, and the Queenstown, Wanaka, Haast, Fox Glacier and Te Anau Offices.
Hard copies can be bought from the Otago Conservancy at $20 per copy. A CD of the draft plan is also available, at no cost.
