Aoraki/Mount Cook Long Term Community Plan

Consultation now closed

What is the plan about?

The Long Term Community Plan (LTCP) for Aoraki/Mount Cook describes what services are provided to the Aoraki/Mount Cook community by the Department of Conservation under its ‘local-body’ function – services like water, rubbish disposal, sewage treatment and roading.

The plan describes how each of these activities contributes to the village and outlines planned changes over the next ten years.  It also outlines the costs for the proposed levels of service for each activity.

Why has it been written?

The Department has voluntarily opted to write this plan to:

  • Set clear accountability, directions, and priorities for the management of the village infrastructure for the next 10 years, in consultation with stakeholders.
  • Provide a sound base for monitoring and reporting back to the community and government on how well the agreed levels of service have been met.

Although written by Department of Conservation staff with advice from PricewaterhouseCoopers, this plan is intended to be inclusive and to ‘belong’ to the entire Aoraki/Mount Cook community.

What does this have to do with me?

Businesses in the village who pay a local-body contribution through their concession fees, will be interested in local-body activities, costs and planned changes.  Community members who do not contribute financially may also have an interest in what kind of community they want to live in or on the village community and recreational facilities.

Submissions closed

The LTCP is a draft document. The department invited the Aoraki/Mount Cook community and other interested parties to review it and provide comment before it is finalised and becomes the guiding document for the village. The consultation closed on Friday 21 August 2009.

What happens next?

Feedback and comments from the community are being considered and, where appropriate, integrated into the draft plan. The department plans to publish the final LTCP in late 2009.
