Operation Restore - Taranga (Hen) Island restoration project
The Department's Whangarei Area Office in partnership with the Ngatiwai Trust Board is planning an operation to eradicate kiore (Pacific rats) off Taranga Island in winter 2011.
Taranga Island is part of the Hen & Chicken Island group on the Whangarei coastline, Northland.
Kiore, the only animal pest on the Island, are having significant adverse effects on the ecosystem and if nothing is done, the continued existence of the many threatened species here are at risk.
