Sambar deer

Following extensive consultation by the department, the Minister of Conservation has made his decision regarding the future management of sambar deer in the Horowhenua / Manawatu / Rangitikei / Wanganui area. The Minister has opted to totally remove all the current conditions surrounding the recreational hunting of sambar deer in this area.

A gazette notice revoking the current conditions has been published in the New Zealand Gazette, and came into force on the 14th May 2007.

Implications

Sambar deer.
Sambar deer

Removal of the gazette notice will mean that there will no longer be a season for hunting sambar. Sambar, like other deer species, can now be hunted year round and at any time, provided hunters have the landowner's permission.

Recreational hunting opportunities on lands managed by the Department of Conservation are likely to increase due to the ability to have an unlimited season length. To ensure hunting opportunities are allocated safely, fairly and consistently the department will be implementing a system to manage hunting opportunities on public conservation lands. The department is currently working with the Sambar Deer Management Foundation, and consulting with adjoining landowners, to set up a system. Until such time as it is set up, the department will not be issuing hunting permits for reserves known to contain sambar deer.
