Anatoki deer study area

The Anatoki study area is in Kahurangi National Park, west of Takaka in Golden Bay.

The study area encompasses the catchment of the Devil River in the south, the Anatoki River in the middle and the Slate River to the north. The catchment of the Snow River and the Anatoki itself form the western boundary and the eastern edge of the study area runs along the ridge between the Devil and the Waingaro Rivers north to Walker Ridge.

Red beech forest dominates the valley floors, silver beech grows at mid-altitude on the valley slopes, and mountain beech is at the treeline. The area is geologically very diverse and well-known for a diverse flora. In our vegetation plots, we have measured and marked kamahi, red beech and silver beech seedlings. No deer control will be done in the Anatoki study area.
