DOC undertakes management and monitoring of Kaikoura whale-watching operations in an attempt to mitigate the effects of tourism on this species. There are currently moratoriums on whale watching permits at Kaikoura, which are due to expire in 2012.
DOC is also responsible for managing stranding events.
