Reducing the risks

In 2008 a range of nationally consistent actions were proposed and implemented to mitigate against fishing and non-fishing threats through the Hector's and Maui's Dolphins Threat Management Plan.

For Maui's dolphins this meant increasing the area where set netting and trawling is not allowed. View a map of where set nets are prohibited (PDF, 390K).

A Marine Mammal Sanctuary was also put in place over a large part of the west coast of the North Island. Sand mining and seismic surveying for oil and minerals are regulated within the sanctuary.

A recent study on Maui's dolphins reported that there may only be around 55 adult Maui's dolphins (see Abundance estimate). DOC has sought submissions on establishing interim measures to protect Maui's dolphins in the Taranaki region.

A review of the Maui's and Hector's Dolphin Threat Management Plan is also to be undertaken in stages. The focus in 2012 will be on threat mitigation and research priorities for the Maui's dolphins. The review process will be confirmed shortly.
