This species of weta occurs only in the South Island. It prefers alpine habitats, living at altitudes between 620 m and 1725 m., and is found on rocky bluffs in low rainfall ranges (typically eastern areas) and hides in horizontal crevices. The species is known from a series of widespread areas in south Marlborough and from an isolated population on Mt Somers in Canterbury.
