You can help Canterbury penguins
Landowners close to penguin habitat on Banks Peninsula continue to play a vital role in penguin protection. At Stony Bay DOC has a management agreement with landowners to safeguard penguin interests.

Volunteer groups and trusts
Groups active in penguin protection in Canterbury include the White-Flippered Penguin Trust who have created a safe colony at Boulder Bay, and the Otamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust who are working to recreate penguin habitat on Quail Island.
Local school adopts penguin colonies
Two colonies of white-flippered penguin at the headlands of Le Bons Bay, Banks Peninsula are being cared for by students and parents of the local school. With the help of local DOC rangers they set up a trap line on-top of the cliffs above the colony, which they check regularly. Yellow-eyed penguins nest along there too. Parents can remember when penguins used to hang out on the beach at the ‘base’ of the bay, but they are gone from there now.
