Haast tokoeka are categorised as critically endangered. There are an estimated 350 Haast tokoeka surviving in the Haast region, in South Westland. Their close relatives are found on Stewart Island and in Fiordland over 100 km away. They can be found from the lowlands to high in the tussock fields on the Haast and Olivine Ranges.

They were a significant food source for the Maori people and early European explorers until the early 1900s when numbers started to decline.
