Our Billion Dollar Coast - a marine conservation awareness programme for Northland

Northland's spectacular coast and marine environment are one of its most valuable assets.

The region's beaches rate highly among communities for their recreational and aesthetic appeal, with hundreds of residents and visitors enjoying every activity from walking to diving throughout the year.

In terms of diversity, Northland has everything from long sandy beaches to rocky reefs and deep drop-offs, with ready access to mainland and island sites.

The region is the meeting place of three oceanic water bodies and currents - as a result, we have the greatest marine biodiversity of any other region in NZ.

Northland's marine environment needs as much care and protection as the land, if not more. Our billion dollar coast will go bankrupt if we don't put the right resources into it!

The Department of Conservation is supporting community awareness and engagement efforts - from organisations, groups, individuals and tangata moana - to help do this.
